SUZUKI NEWS: Rockstar Energy Suzuki Leaves Daytona With Two Season Best Finishes

March 8, 2010

The AMA/FIM Supercross Championship event took place under the lights on Saturday night on some of motorsport’s most sacred ground, the infield at Daytona International Speedway. The event marked the end of Daytona bike week, the week-long celebration of anything and everything related to motorcycling, and the fans flooded the stadium to get one last racing fix before it was over. The track, designed by Supercross legend and long-time Suzuki rider Ricky Carmichael, was low and fast, with short jumps and long straights that took full advantage of the infield’s long and narrow space.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki Lites rider and rising star Blake Bagget put in an exceptional ride aboard his RM-Z250, finishing with a season best of fourth place in his third professional Supercross race. “I got a good start, and was in the lead for a while,” said Blake. The young California native lead the pack for a portion of the first lap, but was then overtaken by two other riders. Though he had been passed, he continued to race hard, and was never far behind the leaders. As the race progressed and lappers began to come into play, the traffic became an issue for Blake. The congestion forced him to slow up a bit, and as a result Blake was passed for third place. Blake’s time at the front of the pack has made him eager to get on the podium. “I’m going to work on eliminating the mistakes and protecting my lines,” said Blake. “There was some nervousness before, but each week gets better and better.”

In the premier class, Tommy Hahn was off to a competitive fourth place start before the race was red-flagged. The restart did not go as well, with Tommy getting off the line in 15th. “I didn’t get as good a start as I would have liked on the restart,” said Tommy. “I just put my head down and rode as hard as I could after that.” Down but not out, Tommy piloted his RM-Z450 through the pack to a season-best finish of sixth place. When asked how he felt about the race, Tommy replied, “I feel like I put in a solid ride, and I needed that.”

Tommy also faced some new competition in the premier class on Saturday night. Former Rockstar Energy Suzuki Lites rider Ryan Morais made the jump to the 450 class, riding for the injured Matt Moss on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team. “It was fun riding the 450 class,” said Ryan. “I was just focused on learning and getting through the race safely. I ended up getting tenth, but I’m hoping I can build on that in the future.” The former teammates spent much of the night battling with each other, and moving through the pack. “Ryan and I had some good battles, but we kept it clean and tried to come through it together,” said Tommy.

Lites class rider Jake Moss faced some tough competition as well, but in his case the trouble came in the form of a nasty case of arm-pump. According to Team Manager Bill Keefe, “Jake is still hurting from his previous injuries, but he has been very proactive in his training and at the races.” Jake will be training hard this week to get back to 100% for next week’s race.

The next round of the AMA/FIM Supercross championship will take place at Rodgers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
